Outside of his acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy, Nolan has consistently avoided directing sequels. His filmography is marked by self-contained, original ideas that are meant to stand alone. The director has stated that he doesn’t subscribe to a fixed principle of avoiding sequels, but rather assesses each project on its own merits. In the case of Interstellar , the story was crafted to be complete. The film’s ambiguous, awe-inspiring finale is not a cliffhanger, but a philosophical conclusion that would arguably be diminished by an unnecessary direct sequel.
