Für Quelle war dies ein entscheidender Wettbewerbsvorteil, denn die Produkte waren zehn bis 15 Prozent günstiger als vergleichbare westdeutsche Ware. Die DDR wiederum benötigte dringend die Devisen. So war der Quelle-Katalog im Kalten Krieg eine Brücke zwischen zwei Welten, die sich ideologisch eigentlich unversöhnlich gegenüberstanden.
