When we apply the same nuclear label to a violent predator and a socially inept introvert, we dilute the language of harm. Worse, we create a culture of paranoia where an accidental glance can ruin a life.
Calling out served two purposes:
The ability to alter images and videos (deepfakes) allows for the creation of false narratives. An innocent person can be rendered "that pervert" through the unauthorized alteration of their digital likeness, leading to serious damage to their reputation, dignity, and social standing. that pervert
Can the label ever be neutralized? Some queer theorists argue for reclamation, similar to how other slurs have been internalized and rendered harmless by the targeted community. The phrase will never disappear from the human vocabulary. We are wired to identify, label, and ostracize those who violate our deepest norms. And in the case of genuine predators, that label is a vital tool of community defense. An innocent person can be rendered "that pervert"
But what do we actually mean when we point our finger at that pervert ? Are we identifying a monster, a misunderstood social outcast, or simply someone who violated an invisible line we drew in the sand?
If someone commits a sex crime, call them a predator or an offender. Use specific, legal language. "Pervert" is too vague for a police report.
